The bar at Townhouse Venice speakeasy

Townhouse Venice

100 years of revelry. One of the best bars on the Westside, Townhouse Venice is a necessary visit. It’s a rustic, vintage space that holds the title as the oldest cocktail bar in Venice. Open since 1915, this former speakeasy during prohibition still offers quality cocktails and a good time. DJs come through on weekends and they host unique events in the underground level during the week. (The dancefloor can get lit so come prepared.) There’s also an al fresco patio to catch the ocean breeze. Crowds come ready to mix and mingle making it a solid locale for meeting new people. All in all, this bar will be an essential stop on your Windward Avenue bar crawl just steps away from Venice Beach.

Townhouse Venice Details:

🍔 Food:
On Sundays on the patio there’s a food pop-up with rotating vendors each week. No food otherwise, but Teddy’s Red Tacos next door serve some of the best tacos on the Westside.

🍸 Drinks:
You’ll find both classic and signature cocktails as well as a plentiful beer selection and a few wine options. There are specials now and then so ask the bartender what’s good for the moment.

🎶 Music:
Upstairs you’ll get a DJ on weekends creating the perfect vibe with Top 40 hits. If you go downstairs (also known as the Del Monte Speakeasy), things are kicked up a notch thanks to a full on dancefloor. There’s a DJ on weekends and sometimes weekdays–check their Instagram for the night’s programming.

Ambiance:
This spot has been in business for over a century with good reason. You’ll find a down-to-earth crowd in a welcoming, vintage environment. Grab a booth to chat with friends or you can catch up over a game of pool. Weekday events downstairs include live bands, burlesque, and comedy shows. There’s also a Sunday day party on the patio. There’s sometimes a $10 cover on busier nights so bring cash just in case. While there’s no intricate speakeasy entrance here, Townhouse’s history as a prohibition go-to forever solidifies the label.

📸 Photo Ops:
No photo op gimmicks here, but you can’t go wrong with a photoshoot in front of their colorful, floral wallpaper in the lounge.
